A deranged mental patient, John Barrie, escapes from a
high security hospital and changes his identity. Barrie is
a master of disguise who sets up a battle of wits with Morse
as the Oxford police engage in a manhunt...
The
Day of the Devil explores the dark and sinister phenomena
of devil worshipping. A very clever and sophisticated plot
with dark direction from Stephen Whittaker. Barrie's clever
identity changes had me fooled at times, very well done.
Guest
appearances include Gilly Conmen (Bread) as the kidnapped
victim and Gavin Richards (Eastenders). Harriet Walter
plays a blinding role as Dr. Ester Martin.
The
Day of the Devil includes some excellent scenes including
one where Morse openly air's his views on women in front of
a policewoman (who doesn't look best pleased).
An
excellent episode, definitely in my top 10.
Businessman
Andrew Baydon is donating a controversial new college building
to Oxford. Morse and Lewis are already investigating the murder
of a journalist when a shooting takes place in the college
grounds during a honorary procession...
Twilight
of the Gods appears to be an expensive shoot judging by
the amount of extras involved in shooting the procession.
Guest stars a young Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) and Sir
John Gielguid stars with Jean Anderson as his wife as the
Oh' so British couple - Anyone for Tea?
Gladys Probert played by Shelia Gish catches Morse's eye,
if only he knew what she was really like (the scenes in her
dressing room certainly shows her in a different light).
Andrew
Baydon is excellently played by Robert Hardy whose favourite
word is "knobhead" which he seems to call everyone
- including his poor secretary who seems to get the short
end of the stick.
Full
of subplots, this episode has an excellent ending and is fantastic
to watch.
