For years the fashion industry has thrived on cheap Malaysian
workers to turn out its clothes, but now the Malaysian prime
minister is determined to ensure his people earn a fair wage.
This has gone down like a lead balloon with the head designers
who have hatched a cunning plan to hypnotise an unwitting
model to assassinate the troublesome prime minister. But who
is stupid enough to do the job? Step forward Derek Zoolander...
Stiller's
portrayal as the "really, really, really good looking"
Derek Zoolander is first rate. From the first time we see
his 'blue steel' pose it is obvious that we are dealing with
a half-wit, but one with a heart.
This
movie is destined to become a cult, camp classic but as funny,
and off the wall as it is I couldn't help feeling that there
was something missing.
There
are too many classic scenes to list, but some of the those
that spring to mind include Zoolander's model chums being
killed in a horrific garage accident (and the statue of the
incident which is erected later in the movie); Zoolander turning
up to his friends funeral in white and the final attack on
the Malaysian prime minister.
The
ongoing professional battle with model Hansel is pointless
and would have worked better if the character had been dropped
once the award ceremony gag had been played out.
There
is a fine selection of supporting actors. Will Ferrell is
great as the camp fashion designer Mugatu, who is determined
to turn Zoolander into a killing machine and Jon Voight appears
briefly as Zoolander's father. There are also more than a
dozen brief cameo appearance by celebrities including Tim
Allen and Victoria (Posh Spice) Beckham.
This
is one of those movies that you really have to be in the right
frame of mind to appreciate and if you do you will love this.
