When Flynn hacks the mainframe of his ex-employer to prove
his work was stolen by another executive, he finds himself
on a much bigger adventure. Beamed inside by a power-hungry
master control program (MCP), he joins computer gladiators
on a deadly game grid, complete with high velocity light cycles
and Tron, a specialised security program. Together they fight
the ultimate battle with the MCP to decide the fate of both
electronic world and the real world...
At
the time of its release Tron was a masterpiece of breakthrough
CGI ingenuity and it has aged pretty well. If you are a 30-something
then you will no doubt remember the movie from its original
release and getting the chance to buy this now, 20 years on
is certainly an opportunity not to be passed up.
Some
excellent casting, state-of-the-art (at the time) computer
effects and a truly original plot ensure that this movie is,
and has remained one of a kind.
In
a time when most companies are releasing 2-disc sets at £24
and upwards it is refreshing to see that Tron is available
at £19.99. But do you get any worthwhile extras?
The
second disc contains a The Making Of Tron documentary;
deleted scenes (which are not really that special); storyboards
showcasing early work on Light Cycles; and a couple of scenes
(including the Light Cycle race) where the composer had originally
written a score to accompany the action. These scenes can
now be viewed with the music included. There are plenty of
other extras to keep fans of the movie amused for a few hours.
This
is a classic movie which is as fresh today as when it was
released 20 years ago. Good, clean family entertainment at
its best. Although the younger generation, brought up on a
stable diet of Playstation2 may wonder what all the fuss is
about.
