John Robie, a reformed jewel thief once known as "The Cat"
is suspected of a new rash of gem thefts in the luxury hotels
of the French Riviera, and he must set out to clear himself.
Meeting pampered heiress Frances, he sees the chance to bait
the mysterious thief with her mother's fabulous jewels. His
plan backfires, however, but Frances, who believes him guilty,
proves her love by helping him escape...
To
Catch a Thief is not one of my favourite Hitchcock movies.
I have always found it a little on the slow side. And, just
as it starts to pick up the pace, it is all over far too quickly.
There
are problems on the DVD release with Cary Grant's sweater,
which he wears for the first 20 minutes of the movie. It strobes
really bad and will no doubt cause a few headaches for viewers.
And just when you think it can't get any worse, he meets up
with a woman who has a similar stripy top which also strobes.
There is also some terrible dubbing in one scene (which the
additional features on the disc reveal was due to the fact
that the actor didn't speak a word of English).
There
is a good, compact collection of extras. The featurettes interview
crew - who look back on their time on the movie - as well
as Alfred Hitchcock's daughter (Pat Hitchcock) and granddaughter
(Mary Stone) who fondly remember Alfred and the cast from
the movie. We are also told of the problems the production
had with the sensors who wanted no bikini shots on the beach
scenes.
Sadly,
not one of Hitchcock's more gripping movies, but still a cracking
good film for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
