Skinner and Scully finally learn the whereabouts of Fox Mulder,
who has been in hiding for the past year. He is being held
prisoner, awaiting trial for the murder of a man he couldn't
possibly have killed: Knowle Rohrer, one of the government's
secret super-soldiers...
How
do you end The X-Files? How do you bring a sense of
closure to a series that has, over the years, specialised
in mystery and concealment - in hinting at, while constantly
evading, the "truth" about alien abductions and government
conspiracies - without ruining the potential for any future
movies? The truth is, it must have been an almost insurmountable
task to make this 90-minute finale work as a drama at all.
Mulder's
trial, which forms the middle half-hour of the story, is an
extremely talky affair, during which various characters, both
old and new, explain to the court (and to us, with the aid
of some illustrative clips from previous episodes) exactly
what has been going on for the last nine years. If you're
a dedicated fan, you will probably have worked most of it
out already, but these trial scenes do a pretty good job of
joining together some of the more obscure dots.
Predictably,
The Truth features a number of return appearances by
characters who were once a major part of this series - the
most gratifying of which is, of course, David Duchovny's Mulder.
Most of the other returning characters appear in cameo roles,
and, this being The X-Files, being presumed dead does
not prevent them from reappearing! Some characters, however,
are conspicuous by their absence... but if I told you which
ones they are, it would ruin the story for you.
Some
hefty explosions are thrown in to liven things up towards
the end of the story, but this is not one of the most exciting
episodes in the show's history. Nevertheless, The Truth
fulfils its almost impossible brief as well as can be
expected.
Also
included on this DVD is the superior bonus episode, William,
directed by David Duchovny. Dealing with an engaging question
of identity, this is, in my opinion, the strongest mythology
show of the entire ninth season. Just make sure that you watch
this episode before you watch The Truth, otherwise
it could spoil your enjoyment of both.
The
disc also features a 13-minute documentary, Reflections
on The Truth. This includes open discussion of some of
the finale's more surprising plot elements and characters,
so you should, of course, watch this last of all. True.
