How and why the Great Pyramid was built has been puzzling
man for 4500 years and many believe that even with our 21st
century technology, we could not build anything like it today...
Based
on the most up-to-date research and the latest archaeological
discoveries, Building
the Great Pyramid raises
the representation of the ancient past onto a completely new
level. Not only does it offer an explanation of how and why
the most extraordinary of all human monuments was built -
it does so through the eyes of one of the men enlisted to
complete its construction.
It
follows a young Egyptian man, Nahkt, who is conscripted from
his village to work on the Great Pyramid and works his way
up the ranks to a senior overseer.
The
events that unfold are fascinating and it's great to see that
this is presented in anamorphic widescreen and has a healthy
collection of extras. These include a making of featurette
(which has a truly awful British female voice-over artist),
a look at the special effects and fact files.
Omar
Sharif lends his vocal talents as the role of narrator/Nahkt
in this wonderfully constructed piece of television. My only
real complaint (and it is very minor) is that the opening
segments are accompanied by the music from the movie Gladiator.
I'd be interested to know why this was when there were two
composers credited and neither was Hans Zimmer.
Anyone
interested in Ancient Egyptian history should get hold of
this wonderfully entertaining DVD.
