An
aircraft manufacturer is obsessed with breaking the sound
barrier, even though his obsession costs him his humanity,
the love of his family and the ultimate sacrifice - his son...
Breaking
The Sound Barrier stars Ralph Richardson, Ann Todd and
Nigel Patrick. This true story charts the commitment and bravery
of the men who risked their lives in pursuit of supersonic
flight. Richardson plays the driven aircraft manufacturer
who seems to feel no remorse when two members of his family
are killed in separate accidents.
A wonderful movie, there are a number of things that date
it. The sexism, which was rife at the time shines through,
with Ann Todd's character being little more than set dressing
- which is a shame. Other than that this is a classic movie
which also stars an extremly young Denholm Elliott.
Henry
Horatio Hobson is a tyrannical, drunken widowed bootmaker
responsible for the well-being of his three unruly daughters.
His rule is challenged by eldest daughter Maggie who marries
his star bootmaker and sets up a rival shop. But will this
competition make Hobson relent and achieve freedom for her
sisters?...
Hobson's
Choice is a classic movie. Charles
Laughton is wonderful in the role of the overbearing Hobson.
There are many laugh out loud moments as well as numerous
scenes where you want to slap Hobson for being so sexist and
classicist.
A
very young Prunella Scales (of Fawlty Towers fame)
also stars as one of Hobson's daughters. A
great movie, but the lack of any extras is a shame.
This
is a great collection, (both movies won BAFTA awards for Best
British Film) but as both movies are being released under
the "double bill" range I was surprised that there
were no extras included. But then, two movies on one disc
does make it difficult to include much else.
