A
housewife's perfect life and marriage prove no match for the
irresistible, carnal urges triggered by a chance meeting with
a handsome stranger. As their passion becomes obsession the
true price of betrayal takes its shattering toll when the
torrid affair is exposed. With outstanding performances from
Richard Gere and Lane, Unfaithful tells the story of a woman
who is prepared to risk everything for one night of passion...
I
wasn't expecting a great deal from this movie. If you've seen
one erotic thriller you've seen them all - or so I thought.
And I was never a huge fan of Adrian Lyne's movies post Fatal
Attraction (9 1/2 Weeks and Indecent Proposal
were just so dull). But Unfaithful delivers a lot
more than you'd imagine.
The
first half of the movie sets up the scene with Connie Sumner
(Diane Lane) living the perfect life. She's married to Edward
(Richard Gere) and they have an eight year old son. But when
she accidentally bumps into French book dealer Paul Martel
(Oliver Martinez) they start a passionate affair.
Part
of the beauty of this movie is that there is no rationalising
the affair. Her husband isn't a bad man and her son doesn't
stress her out to the point that an affair provides a release
from her home life - which is a perfectly happy one. It just
happens. But it is the second half of the movie where you
sit up and take notice.
Very
loosely based on the the French movie La Femme Infidele,
this movie would work incredibly well as a theatre production.
There are very few sets and the fact the movie is broken down
into two halves makes it perfect for this medium. And the
movie is shot almost like a play.
With
an RRP of £16 you get a mighty collection of extras
(including director's commentary, cast commentary, alternate
ending, 11 deleted scenes and a handful of featurettes.)
With
a great ending, which will catch you on the hop, this is a
surprisingly refreshing movie - adding much to the genre.
Worth
a look - it certainly delivers more than you'd think.
