An English parlour maid journeys to China and opens an
inn for tired, hungry mule drivers crossing desolate mountain
trails. Gradually overcoming the natives hostility, she wins
the heart of an Eurasian colonel and converts a powerful mandarin
to Christianity. But her greatest feat is achieved during
the Japanese invasion of China when she leads one hundred
homeless children to safety across enemy-held terrain...
Powerful
and poignant, this inspired film was adapted from Alan Burgess'
best-seller The Small Woman. The Inn Of The Sixth
Happiness is based on the life story of Gladys Aylward,
a modern day saint whose unquenchable passion to do good took
her half way around the world. Inspired by her dream to be
a missionary.
Ingrid
Bergman is as beautiful as ever in this wonderful movie. There
are also some fantastic performances including a great cameo
from Burt Kwouk.
A
destitute woman, who remarkably resembles the Princess Anastasia,
is chosen by two Russian courtiers to masquerade as the princess
in order to gain ten million pounds. Meeting scepticism initially
from the family Anastasia wins her way into the heart of the
family...
This
1956 version of Anastasia was adapted from the play
by Marcelle Maurette. The movie received huge critical success
at the box office, winning Ingrid Bergman the Best Actress
Oscar for her portrayal of Anna. This was the first movie
Bergman had made after six year absence from Hollywood, due
to a scandalous affair with director Roberto Rossellini.
Recent
DNA testing has since proved that Anna was indeed a fake,
so sadly the mystery has gone from the story a little.
Still
a wonderful cinematic delight.
The
only real criticism to be levelled at this release (but remember
you get two great movies for £15) is that the prints
could have done with a bit of TLC. In a number of places the
colour is all over the place, changing from one shade to another.
