In the criminal justice system, the people are represented
by two separate yet equally important groups: the police who
investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute
the offenders. These are their stories...
                  Filmed
in New York each episode of Law & Order is divided
into two parts. The first concentrates on the investigation
of crime by the police detectives and the second half follows
the prosecution of the crime in court.
                  Detectives
Greevey (George Dzunda) and Logan (Chris Noth) spend the first
half of each episode running around New York trying to work
out whether they can arrest apparent perpetrators of crimes.
However, things are not always black and white and the two
are constantly at odds with each other.
                  Episodes,
like Subterranean Homeboy Blues, reflect the serious
racist divide in America when two black youths are shot by
a white woman in a New York subway. The youths seem to have
clean records, but that doesn't stop witnesses, and some police
officers, from being prejudice. They are black and young therefore
they 'got what they deserved' is a common opinion.
                  This
is not racist television making, rather a program reflecting
what a racist society we live in. Other episodes tackle abortion,
AIDS and rogue cops on the rampage. None of the stories are
bogged down with snatches of the private lives of the main
characters, allowing the episode to concentrate on what it
really important. And this is a refreshing change to your
average cop show or courtroom dramas.

                  The
only extra included on this collection is a new 15 minute
documentary, The Creation of Law and Order, which explains
the origins of the show and how it nearly didn't get picked
                    up by the networks.
                  This
is a fantastic series although it's a shame that the original
pilot episode was not included. This first season was originally
broadcast in 1990 and the show was recently renewed until
                    2005.
                  A
great collection of an impressively intelligent series.
