Henry VIII has just married Marie of Normandy and is eager
to consummate their marriage. Unfortunately for Henry, she's
always eating garlic and refuses to stop. Deciding to get
rid of her in his usual manner, Henry has to find some way
of doing it without provoking war with Marie's cousin, the
King of France. Perhaps if she had an affair...
Henry
(1971) was the Carry On's last real laugh. Although
not totally satisfactory - Barbara Windsor for instance is
far too old for her part - there's enough good moments from
a team which by this time could have made a meal out of the
thinnest of material. Talbot Rothwell's script and Gerald
Thomas' direction may not be up to their sterling best but
with Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey and Joan Sims to hand
the whole things runs off quite smoothly. And Sid James seems
to have been born to play a comedy Henry VIII.
Not
the best Carry On, but certainly not the worst, Carry
On Henry makes the most of its meagre script ingredients
by applying large quantities of old school energy. Sadly,
this would be the series' last hurrah. What followed was generally
pretty nasty.
