The
young orphan Mary is sent to live with her aunt Patience and
uncle Joss, owners of the Jamaica Inn. But not everything
is as it seems and Mary soon comes to realise that the inn
is the base for a gang of west country pirates who are luring
ships to their doom on the rocky coast below. The frightened
girl starts fearing for her life...
Jamaica
Inn was Alfred Hitchcock's first adaptation of a Daphne
du Maurier novel (he later made Rebecca and The
Birds from her stories). The film is a tense and atmospheric
tale of thieves and cut-throats set on the rugged Cornish
coast.
One
of Hitchcock's best remembered British movies and not without
reason. Despite its age and studio-bound exteriors the film
still manages to create a convincing atmosphere and Charles
Laughton, who plays the duplicitous Sir Humphrey Pengallan,
is on top form as the nasty and sadistic villain of the piece.
The
only real problem with this disc is the quality of the transfer.
It's shocking. Film weave, dust, dirt and sparkle all mar
the picture while hiss and distortion dog the soundtrack.
For such a classic movie this shoddy treatment is unforgivable.
