Three steelworkers from Pennsylvania have their lives changed
irrevocably by the Vietnam War. When Michael, Steven and Nick
are captured by the Vietcong, they are forced to play Russian
Roulette by their brutal captors, who make bets on their survival.
The experience of capture leaves them with terrible physical
and spiritual wounds and when Michael returns to Saigon to
fulfil an old vow to one of his friends he makes an unexpected,
horrific discovery.
It's
not hard to see why The Deer Hunter won five Academy
Awards (Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Christopher Walken,
Best Director, Best Picture, Best Sound and Best Editing.)
Based
E.M. Corder's novel, this was the first serious Hollywood
feature to address the Vietnam War. The movie has aged gracefully
and
don't forget, the main theme music also featured on Take
Hart - now there's class for you!
This
is one of those movies that you either love or can't abide.
At just under three hours it will leave you feeling elated,
or with a numb bum. The movie has aged considerably, but is
still extremely touching - even if most of today's younger
audience haven't got a clue what the Vietnam War was all about.
It also contains one of the all time classic movie sequences
of all time - you'll know it when you see it.
This
special edition includes a commentary by director Michael
Cimino; Realising The Deer Hunter: an Interview with
Michael Cimino; Shooting The Deer Hunter: an interview
with cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond; Playing The Deer
Hunter: an interview with John Savage; Theatrical trailer
and picture gallery.
Sadly,
there's no sign of the 40+ minutes of deleted material that
Cimino mentions in his interview, but otherwise this is a
fantastic collection.
