The wheels of horror churn amid touches of humour in this
twisted tale of sorcery most fowl. Inspired by the gothic
poem by Edgar Allan Poe this Roger Corman classic about two
wizards dueling for magical supremacy is totally bewitching...
The
Raven stars horror legends Vincent Price, Peter Lorre
and Boris Karloff - as well as Jack Nicholson in an early
screen role. I was unsure of whether the majority of the humour
in this movie was intentional. Sure, there are moments where
it is obviously tongue in cheek, but the music seems too silly
to believe and some of the dialogue is very corny. But then
there are scary scenes - like the corpse of Vincent Price's
supposedly departed wife.
This
has aged fairly well, as a horror/comedy, and the film print
used to transer to DVD is of acceptable quality - although
there are a few marks visible from time to time.
If
you like you horror with a touch of camp humour then you'll
love this. Why it hasn't become a student classic is a mystery.
An
entertaining movie even though there are no extras.
