It's party time for Karen and her friends, when they discover
their snowman Frosty has come to life on Christmas Eve! But
will they be able to save Frosty from the sunshine and escape
the clutches of the evil Professor Hinckle, who wants to steal
Frosty's magical hat?...
Rankin/Bass
moved away from 3D models and instead turn to cartoon animation
for this classic tale. The story and animation have aged well
and this will no doubt keep the whole family entertained.
But
it is the DVD's second feature, Frosty Returns, that
is the real winner here. John Goodman stars as the voice of
Frosty, in this tale about a power hungry tycoon who has invented
'Summer Wheeze', a spray which instantly removes snow. Frosty's
friend Holly is determined to save him and has to convince
the people of Beansboro that snow is a good thing, otherwise
Christmas will be changed forever and Frosty will disappear.
The
animation and voices are very reminiscent of the classic Peanuts
animated cartoons staring Snoopy and Charlie Brown, crossed
with characters from The Beano. There are plenty of
more mature jokes as well, so adults will appreciate it a
little more than the first feature.
There
is also a couple of extras including a short example of the
test animation and a pretty poor interview with Arthur Rankin
which sees him reading badly from an autocue.
Certainly
a collection that the kids will enjoy again and again.
