Stardate 8454.130. Vacationing Captain Kirk faces two challenges:
climbing Yosemite's El Capitan and teaching campfire songs
to Spock. But the vacation is cut short when a renegade Vulcan
hijacks the Enterprise, and pilots it on a journey to uncover
the universe's innermost secrets...
Well
known to fans as The Search for God, Star Trek V:
The Final Frontier is infamous for being the worst of
the Star Trek movies. And it's not hard to see why.
William
Shatner - co-writer, director and star - pumps his ego to
the max in this movie that, put simply, is: "Kirk takes
on God... and wins". Sadly, it would seem that he has
not learnt his lesson, and that ego is still alive and well
in a series of ongoing books from Pocket Books in which Shatner
rewrites history with Kirk as the victor.
Sadly,
the only extra I was looking forward to getting my hands on
was the audio commentary by William Shatner. I was interested
to hear what he had to say with hindsight about his time on
the movie and whether he had any comments on why the movie
was not received as well as hoped. Unfortunately we only received
a review disc for the extras on the second disc, so that little
treat was not available to me.
The
extras on the second disc are interesting, but only to real
Star Trek nuts (who probably know all the info revealed
here), and I doubt whether you'll rewatch the second disc
once you've seen it once. And, to be honest I didn't feel
like there was anything included that was essential that I
watch. The Rockman footage was interesting (sort of). And
it was a good call to drop this monster from the finished
movie.
Paramount
have confusingly decided to call this release a "special
edition". Now, wasn't a special edition released a while
ago along with a standard edition? Er... yes it was. And didn't
the packaging look similar? Er... yes it did. So wouldn't
it have made more sense to call this the "2-disc special
edition"?
Extras
include: Audio commentary by William Shatner and Liz Shatner;
Trivia track; 'The Journey' featurette; 4 deleted scenes;
Herman Zimmerman: A Tribute; Vintage interview with William
Shatner; That Klingon Couple; A Green Future?; Harve Bennett's
pitch; Make-up tests; Pre-visualisation models; Rockman In
The Raw; Production stills; Storyboards; and Trailers.
Not
really worth buying if you already own the movie, and er...
not really buying if you don't already own the movie. Seriously
though, this is not quite as bad as I remembered - it does
have it's moments. It's just that it's not as good as it should
have been.
