Blinding
lights shoot across a blood red sky, aeroplanes plummet to
earth and suicidal birds smash themselves into bloody smears.
This marks the beginning of the end for humanity as the alien
menace Goke prepares to invade our planet, one soul at a time...
When
I started to review this film I must confess I was very sceptical
about it. A 1960's film with seemingly dodgy special effects
and a bad guy, with a cut in his forehead!
But the old saying goes, that you cannot judge a book by its
cover. And I am so glad that I didn't, because it's actually
rather good. Whilst the effects may be a bit ropey (But most
likely cutting edge for their time) the acting is spot on.
The plot itself is very simple and it doesn't take much to
figure out what is going on, but to be honest this doesn't
matter.
This
is a kitsch classic, creepy in many places and reminds you
that they don't make them like this any more - and to a certain
extent that is not a bad thing. But this film reeks of simple
sixties American TV. It wasn't designed to blow you away with
fantastic effects or to shock you in any way. It's simply
there to entertain you and give you some atmosphere and this
succeeds in spades.
The
transfer itself is exactly what you would expect without a
million pound overhaul. Slightly grainy but that is to be
expected with a film of this age and is presented in anamorphic
widescreen. Sound is Dolby Digital 2.0 and actually sounds
quite good. Very little hiss and speech is very clear.
The
extras are a slight let down with some trailers, biographies,
filmographies and an artwork show reel.
All
in all, this is a very acceptable package. The film itself
is good quality and is suitable for most ages, although the
extras do let it down.
