Around 150 Supercars, 3000 Miles, 14 arrests and over $50,000
in fines. Fasten your seatbelts, start up your engines for
the movie of the Gumball 3000 Rally from San Francisco to
Miami. Amazing cars, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys
and the Swedish Koenigsegg Supercar set off for six days of
driving to the limit, hitting speeds of over 240 mph on the
highways of America...
When
I first read the synopsis for Gumball 3000 I was convinced
it was going to be one of those fake documentaries. But no,
this is for real. Make no mistake, this is a DVD packed full
of organised illegal speeding. And it's quite sad to see how
pathetic most of the entrants really are.
While
fast cars and cop chases may appeal to under 15s (this has
an 18 certificate by the way) why anyone over the age of 18
would want to watch a bunch of losers racing across America
is anyone's guess.
Our
entrants are... A man with a short tongue - Wow! How cool
is he?; An English girl who brags about how many cars she
has written off; and more anoraks than have ever been seen
outside of a Babylon 5 convention. There are also a
number of F-list celebrities tagging along for the ride (no
pun intended) but as we are never told who they are I only
spotted Tony Hawk, Jodie Kidd and the hard to miss Cuban Brothers.
There
was one guy who I thought was a real nutter, until it was
revealed that he was actually sticking, for the most part,
to the speed limit at every leg of the journey. That way,
he never got pulled over for speeding, and actually managed
to hit the most checkpoints first.
Laugh
yourself stupid at the audacity of contestants who are moaning
that the police have pulled them over five times on a single
day... er... how about not breaking the law if you don't want
to get a ticket.
As
a documentary on tossers, this is fantastic. However, as it
has been produced to glorify a bunch of rich people who like
putting their, and other people's, lives at risk, I really
can not say that this is anything other than pathetic. Every
one of the contestants who moaned that they were given speeding
tickets should be forced to watch footage of car crash victims
(a common practice in the UK for those convicted of reckless
driving).
This
DVD glorifies illegal racing and, in a time when there are
way too many arseholes on our roads, the last thing we need
to do is encourage more.
