When it comes to certified cartoon superstars, the
Looney Tunes line-up includes a roster of top talent. Now, in this collection of fully restored, original animated shorts, fans - old and young alike - will find a cavalcade of early appearances and critically acclaimed cartoons...

While this collection features characters familiar to generations of Looney Tunes fans, it also includes a number of animated shorts with characters that will not be overly familiar. These include a much too cute kitten and a big soft bulldog (Feed the Kitty) and Beaky the Buzzard (Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid).

While these unfamiliar cartoons are enjoyable, it is still great to see old favourites take up the majority of the screen time. This collection features Buggs, Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner (in their first outing in Fast and Furryous); Marvin the Martian, Pepe Le Pew and Porky Pig.

Extras include the interactive Back In Action DVD ROM game based on the new animated/live action film; Behind the Tunes featurettes; Toonheads: The Lost Cartoons documentary; Commentaries by cartoon historians; All Time favourite soundtracks.

I think it's worth examining the extras a little more closely, because they really have packed in some great features. Firstly, you can play a number of the 14 cartoons on offer with audio commentaries or music only option. The commentaries provide some great background information on the episodes, and the soundtrack only option allows you to appreciate the full orchestrated scores.

There are also a collection of Behind-the-Tunes mini featurettes, which look at the behind the scenes stars - including voice artist Mel Blanc and the prolific composer who wrote more than 600 cartoon scores in just over 20 years, Carl Stalling. And finally, there is the 45 minute documentary ToonHeads: The Lost Cartoons, which looks at the origins of Looney Tunes and then goes on to dig out some propaganda movies from the Second World War and Vietnam, as well as looking at the role Looney Tunes characters have played in American advertising.

The only slight moan (and this is a very small niggle) is that this collection features too much Bugs Bunny. Now, I know that is a good thing, it's just that with a title like All Stars, you'd expect an appearance from Daffy Duck, Sylvester & Tweety and Speedy Gonzales.

Packed with quality extras, and beautifully restored film prints, this is well worth £13 of anyone's money.
