She may seem like an interfering old busybody, but Miss
Marple has the mind of a genius. If she had a leaning towards
criminally instead of justice, she would probably have the
makings of the perfect murderer. As it is, she not only helps
the law to unravel many a mystery, but makes them look foolish
in the process...
Margaret
Rutherford stars as Miss Jane Marple in four black and white
adaptations of Agatha Christie whodunits. This collection
includes Murder, She Said (1961), Murder Ahoy (1963),
Murder at the Gallop (1963), and Murder Most Foul
(1964).
One
of the great things about these movies is the list of recognisable
actors who appear in cameo roles. These include Richard Briers,
Peter Butterworth, Terry Scott, Derek Nimmo, Nicholas Parsons
and Windsor Davies. Part of the fun for me of watching these
episodes was trying to remember where I had seen some of the
lesser known actors before.
Murder
at the Gallop is probably the best of the bunch here -
it certainly has the best twist at the end. Although you'll
probably not want to dwell too long on the possible romantic
angle that unravels for Miss Marple.
While
all of these movies are excellent in their own right, Murder
Ahoy takes a bit of a knock due to the fact that Lionel
Jeffries portrayal of Captain Rhumstone slips a little too
much into the realms of farce. He is way over the top and
acts more like a spoilt child than a proud captain.
The
character of Mr Stringer (played by Rutherford's husband,
Stringer Davies) is an addition to this movies. The character
never appeared in Agatha Christie's original books, and was
included at Rutherford's request.
If
you are a fan of Agatha Christie, or just like a good murder
mystery, then you'll love this collection.
