A clash between King Solomon and his brother is further complicated
when the Queen of Sheba seduces Solomon in an attempt to bring
about Israel's downfall...
Yul
Brynner plays the mighty King Solomon defending the kingdom
of Israel from his jealous brother the Egyptian Pharaoh Adonijah.
The seductive Queen of Sheba (Gina Lollobrigida) also conspires
against Solomon, aiming to bring down his throne despite falling
in love with him in this classic tale of ambition, greed and
passion.
In
this biblical epic, director King Vidor cinematically explores
the evils of the flesh and pagan worship. Shot in Spain, the
picture chronicles the exploits of its larger-than-life characters.
Brynner is a strong and idealistic Solomon and the sensual
Lollobrigida, in exotic costumes, is magnificent. The pagan
orgy is another highlight of this epic film, surpassed only
by the wrath of God destroying Israel's temple and the battle
sequences.
Sadly,
MGM have not really made much of an effort to clean up the
film print for its transference to DVD. While it's not overly
bad, it could have been a lot better. This, coupled with the
fact that there are no real extras, means that this release
will be a bit of a disappointment to movie buffs.
Great
film, it's just a shame more was not made of this release.
