When a young Yakuza torments the customers in a rival crime
family's nightclub, it is not long before his dead body is
found. Inter-family retaliation follows, resulting in the
death of a prominent crime boss. Devastated by this turn of
events, the temperamental Kenzaki vows to avenge his boss's
death and, as bloody violence ensues as the body count reaches
excessive proportions...
Agitator
is another release from Tartan's Asia Extreme Miike Takashi's
collection and sees the director on good form. The movie takes
us on a twisted trip through the tattoo-strewn, bullet-riddled
world of the Japanese Yakuza.
But
something doesn't feel right. Could this be just a bog standard
Yakuza film? Well whilst I really enjoy Yakuza movies, I must
say that Agitator has let me down.
The
story itself is reasonably straight forward and quite formulaic
- as with all gangster films. The plot is always the same
within the genre, so it's the acting and directing that carry
the movie. Miike Takashi has made some good gangster films
but he must have been having a bad day with this film. The
plot seems a little thin (even in this genre) and the directing
seems a touch rushed and tame. This had a good opportunity
to cut a niche for itself, but it doesn't seem that even Miike
Takashi could pull this one off.
Another
problem with the film is that at over 150 minutes, you really
do start to lose interest in the film. It's overly long and
sadly doesn't let you get lost in its magic. The picture quality
is very grainy but the sound quality is very good. The DVD
has a good DTS track and Dolby 5.1. Other extras include a
booklet and trailer reel.
All
in all, an entertaining film which drags on too long, on a
let down DVD.
