An
ageing King Lear decides to divide his Kingdom between his
three daughters, according to their proclaimed love for him.
However, when his youngest daughter, Cordelia, refuses to
falsely flatter him, she is banished from the Kingdom leaving
her two sisters, Goneril and Regan, to looks after their father
and everything he has bestowed upon them, Only when it is
too late does King Lear see the error of his ways...
Shakespeare's
tragic masterpiece is bought to life in this superb performance
of King Lear, starring Patrick Magee.
This
DVD release is about as close to seeing a RSC performance
as you are likely to get. This stage play is well produced
and looks fantastic. The costumes, set and props help to add
to what is a first rate production.
It
is also interesting to see that there are so many familiar
faces - who you may not associate as Shakespearean actors
(including Patrick
Magee and
Patrick
Mower).
This
DVD is perfect for Shakespeare fans, or any one who has to
study the play as part of their course work. Although, the
lack of optional subtitles is unforgivable as is the lack
of any extras. When a lot of lavish DVDs are being released
at the £15 mark, King Lear looks to be a little
over priced.
If
you don't like Shakespeare then you obviously won't enjoy
this.
