C.S.I. is an acclaimed, edgy, fast-paced drama series about
a passionate team of forensic investigators who work the graveyard
shift at the Las Vegas Criminalistics Bureau. Their job -
to find the missing pieces at the scene that will help to
solve the crime and vindicate those who often cannot speak
for themselves - the victims. Between the hidden clues and
the buried motives lies the trail to the truth because people
lie... but the evidence never does...
The
second half of season two kicks off in style. The first disc
has four cracking episodes on it. The first episode, Random
Acts of Violence, is an extremely powerful one and deals
with the, apparently accidental, drive-by shooting of an innocent
young girl. The girl was the daughter of an old friend of
Warrick's - a man who runs the local youth centre and kept
the young Warrick on the straight and narrow when he was growing
up. This is Gary Dourdan's episode and he pulls of a fantastic
performance - he really should have more episodes where he
takes centre stage.
The
other notable episode on the first disc is Lady Heather's
Box. As the title suggests, this sees the welcome return
of the mistress of pain, Lady Heather. Intelligent, beautiful
and extremely civilised she is the one calming element in
her whirlwind house of S&M.
Sadly
the second disc is a bit of a mixed bag - two weak episodes,
followed by two strong ones. The two weak episodes (Crash
& Burn and Precious Metal) deal with the scene
of an accident, after a car driver ploughs into a restaurant
full of diners; and the murder of a competitor from the world
of battle bots (an underground version of Robot Wars
- if you like). These episodes are not truly awful, just a
little slow when compared to the other stories in this collection.
Crash & Burn has some fantastic special effects
for the actual crash sequence, and Precious Metal,
although not intended, is very tongue in cheek.
The
two stronger episodes on this disc are Night at the Movies,
which Hichcock fans will love as it seems that someone is
acting out Strangers on a Train for real, and Last
Laugh, which sees a number of comedians, including Bob
"Bobcat" Goldthwait (Police Academy), guest
star. This episode sees a stand-up comedian killed during
his act, and it's no laughing matter. Still Grissom and his
team have the last laugh! [Enough rubbish puns - Ed.]
The
final disc contains three great episodes including Forever,
in which a horse trainer is found dead in the cargo hold of
a private jet; Play with Fire, which really surprised
me. I won't say any more than that, but I nearly jumped through
the ceiling when the... Ah, now that would be telling; and
Inside the Box in which the CSI team are left reeling
when one of their own is murdered in a bank robbery, but the
situation only gets worse when Catherine realises that casino
owner Sam Braun, her long-time mentor and father figure, may
be the central figure in the investigation.
Extras
include a few audio commentaries, The CSI Shot: Making
it Real which looks at how those clever effects are created
(like when we see a close up of a bullet ripping through flesh);
Writer's Room; and Crime Scene Field Kit which
takes us through all the gadgets that the CSI team use.
Another
cracking CSI collection that won't disappoint fans.
