For those of you who have recently emerged from carbonite
freezing or have never watched a television before, The
Simpsons is an animated series centred around a nuclear
family known as, ahem, the Simpsons. Years of repeats on TV
networks around the globe have seen Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge
and Maggie (not forgetting all the supporting characters)
become firmly entrenched in popular culture and very over-exposed.
The latter point begs the question of why release any episodes
of the series on sell-through, when The Simpsons can
be seen every day on your favourite cable or satellite channel?...
Collectors
are the people most likely to be interested in a DVD compendium
of episodes. However, when one considers that box-sets (with
extras) of complete seasons are available, a DVD of four episodes
(sans extras of any note) from various seasons seems comparatively
unattractive.
In
New Kid on the Block (Season 4), Bart develops a crush
on new girl Laura (voiced by Roseanne's Sara Gilbert). However,
Homer's exploitation of The Frying Dutchman's offer of "All
You Can Eat" is more interesting and humorous.
The Last Temptation of Homer (Season 5) is a heart-warming
story where Homer struggles to avoid having an extra-marital
affair. The episode's last scene is the best in the entire
episode, but is spoilt in the final seconds.
Bart
After Dark (Season 8) is the highlight of this collection,
featuring a spectacular song-and dance routine, and some excellent
jokes. The Oldest Trade In The World comes under scrutiny,
but, as is often with The Simpsons, the subject is
tackled in such a way that younger viewers will be left blissfully
unaware.
The
collection finishes with Lisa's Rival (Season 6), a
so-so episode with a predictable story. Relief comes in the
form of Homer's attempt to sell stolen sugar, and a bee-keeper
with an Adam West delivery.
