The opening of of Miike's Black Society Trilogy portrays
a world of alienation, corruption and emotional disintegration
that finds its expression in murder, rape and the ultimate
exploitation of a human being. In this twilight world, gangster
and law enforcer attract and repel each other in waves of
violence. Here Tatsuhito; a dirty cop, pursues the gay sadistic
Chinese warlord Wang through the night world of Shinjuku and
over to Taiwan, in search of the financial resources that
underpin his empire...
Shinjuku
Triad Society is a shocking investigation into a dehumanised
world, there Tatsuhito fights to obtain a glimpse of salvation.
Bearing in mind that this film was first released in 1995,
it has aged incredibly well. The plot is lean and tough and
it also kicks off one of Miike's most talked about works.
This
trilogy was filmed on a low budget, but when you are working
with a crew like this, it hardly matters. Taking place in
a very harsh environment, this film is very stereotypical
of the gangster genre but comes lovingly packaged with all
of Miike's usual flair; sex, perverted sex and splashings
of violence.
The
extras on the DVD include an interview with the editor and
commentaries by the ever present Tom Mes as well as interviews
with the director, plus a trailer. The picture transfer is
most likely one of the best you are going to get given the
source material and the Dolby Digital Sound does just fine.
All
in all this is a good disc, but be warned. Once you see this
film you will want to see the other films in the trilogy.
