Whether he's on the beach trying to change into his swimming
trunks without taking off his trousers, or waiting nervously
in the line up at the Royal Premiere, madly rehearsing for
his big moment, Mr Bean will have the whole family in stitches...
This
release marks the first time Mr Bean has been released
on DVD in the UK, and to be frank you'd have thought a little
more effort would have gone into the presentation.
American
fans have been able to buy a region 1 DVD box set entitled
The Complete Mr Bean on DVD since April 2003. That
collection contains three DVDs priced $49.95 (about £27).
What British fans are been asked to spend £20 on is
the biggest joke of this release!
First
of all the prints look awful - the result being that this
looks slightly better than watching an old VHS recording off
the telly. The episodes themselves are still funny (the first
episode in this collection was originally produced in 1989)
but it is the lack of any quality extras that really made
me wonder why Universal even bothered to stick this out in
the first place.
Okay,
I may have been a little harsh there. There are two extras,
one of the animated cartoon series episode (In the Pink)
and a previously unaired sketch (The Library). But
what about an audio commentary? An interview with Atkinson
or one of the writers? Why was no attempt put into this release
at all?
While
the episodes are still very funny (it's almost worth buying
to watch the talented Richard Briars being hit) and Atkinson
proves he really is a comic genius, I really wouldn't waste
£20 on this. Order the US collection instead.
