Young, handsome Father Ralph de Bricassart surrenders to
ambition when he accepts a bequest to the church from wealthy
matriarch Mary Carson. The legacy advances Father de Bricassart
to the upper echelons of church hierarchy, but it denies Mary's
heirs of their rightful fortune - and ties Mary's granddaughter,
Meggie, to the priest. Meggie grows into a stunningly beautiful
woman, and Father de Bricassart suffers the temptation of
a woman he is not allowed - and cannot leave. Together, the
two share a secret passion that endures for decades and proves
greater than even his faith and his love for the church...
The
Thorn Birds
was based on Colleen McCullough's 1977 best selling novel.
Set mainly on a fictional sheep station in Drogheda in the
Australian outback, the plot followed the multi-generational
Cleary family, spanning the years 1920-1962.
The
main story follows Meggie and her relationship with Father
Ralph de Bricassart. They first meet when she is just a child,
and Meggie grows up and falls in love with the handsome, young
Catholic priest who had been banished to the outback for a
previous disobedience.
The
series won the 1983 Golden Globe for Best Miniseries and it's
not difficult to see why. This is a powerful and emotional
drama, however, it has not aged as well as it should have
and it does feel very dated.
Watching
the trailer for this series there is no way the censors would
allow it to be broadcast on TV in today's mass hysteria society,
where pedophiles lurk in every darkened doorway. The first
scene shows Father Ralph (supposedly in his early 20s) meeting
Meggie for the first time. She is about eight and the narrator
proudly declares: "From the moment they first met he
knew he would fall in love with her." What? Isn't that
a little weird? Or is that just me?
Sadly
the only extra is a 2003 documentary entitled Old Friends,
New Stories. While this behind the scenes documentary
is interesting, fans of the series will be expecting more.
If
you remember this from its original release, then you might
want to pick this up. And if you like a good tissue guzzling
weep, then you'll also love this.
