A chemist is assigned to an army base to conduct a series of tests. His teenage daughter and little boy from his first marriage live with him and his new wife in a house on the base. When the boy comes home from playgroup complaining that they are all strange (they all paint the same picture except him) nobody takes him seriously. The girl feels like an outcast until she meets a young helicopter pilot. Everybody is now starting to act curiously emotionless. The little boy sees his mother taken over by a pod, but again it is some time before he is listened to. By the time they realise the danger and try to escape, the base is overrun with people created from pods harvested from the swamp waters bordering the base...

Inspired by the 1956 classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, this continuation of the story from 1993 is handled by the producer of the 1978 remake which starred Leonard Nimoy. I get the distinct impression the sole purpose of this film is to showcase the pods actually taking people over; in this respect it's quite well done. A pod is placed near a sleeping person and, when their defences are down, it extends tendrils which probe the head, entering the mouth and nostrils. A copy of the person is grown within the pod in mere moments and when it is complete the original body caves-in and turns to dust like a spent husk.

Although the performances are fine this is still mediocre as horror films go. The subject matter is good enough, but more thought should have been given to the mood of the piece, because it's simply not frightening. Humans acting differently is simply cheap plotting and doesn't cut the muster. And the unknown is infinitely more creepy than any fancy effect thrust in your face.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to succeed in this field of horror. You either need to create a genuine scare (not just a loud noise to make you jump), mark a completely new approach to existing situations, or change the rules entirely. Unfortunately, this film does none of those.
