The legend of King Arthur is one of the greatest in English
folklore, and tales of brave, chivalrous knights rescuing
damsels in distress never fail to thrill and delight audiences
of all ages. Even in the 21st Century King Arthur is more
popular than ever and this programme will take you on a journey
of discovery to explore this much loved, romantic legend...
Arthur:
King and Country is
a fascinating look into the history of one of the UK's most
famous mythological figures. From
the ragged cliffs of Tintagel in Cornwall where it's claimed
Arthur was born, to the peaceful serenity of Glastonbury Abbey
where visitors can visit King Arthur's grave, this DVD also
goes in search of the magical ancient island of Avalon.
A
lot of information is revealed about the legend that has become
blurred over the centuries. The first revelation is that Arthur
didn't live in the time period most of us believe - the medieval
knight myth was given its last spin by Victorian poet Alfred
Lord Tennyson.
It
examines many elements of the King Arthur legend including
Excalibur, the quest for the Holy Grail and the Lady of the
Lake - with possible real locations.
The
production values of this DVD are not fantastic. Some of the
music is laughable, sounding like it was played on a very
cheap electronic organ, and the narrator is not fantastic
- she sounds like she is reading from a script and puts no
feeling into her work. There was also a very bizarre
segment that briefly compared JFK and King Arthur. Sorry?
I really didn't get that!
This
release is available for the bargain price of £2.99
and if you are planning a holiday in Cornwall, this DVD could
prove useful in showing you a few sights before you travel.
However if you are already well versed in the legend of King
Arthur you probably won't discover anything new here.
An
interesting release.
