When a new cellmate is introduced to the existing nine members
of one prison cell, he starts to crack up. But before the
prison guards drag him off, he imparts the information to
his new cellmates where he has stashed his counterfeit money.
Under cover of darkness these nine prisoners make good their
escape and set off to find the hidden cash before they all
go their separate ways...
The
nine convicts include Torakichi, the eldest who turns out
to be the group's natural leader, who killed his own son;
Kazuma, a former biker who stabbed four of his own gang; Inui,
a mad bomber who suffers from epilepsy; a former doctor Shiratori,
who was jailed for aiding suicide; the reclusive Michiru,
a young man who murdered his own father; the temperamental
Ushiyama; former chinpira (young member of the Japanese Mafia)
Shishido; pimp Kiyoshi and porn entrepreneur Fujio.
From the opening titles this movie had me totally hooked.
It starts as a comedy movie with the nine escapees stopping
to have sex with sheep, rob a store (that has been robbed
numerous times already) and call at a sex shop that seems
to be in the middle of nowhere. Along the way we hear their
stories and get to know them as individuals - what their dreams
are and why they were banged up in the first place.
Eventually
they all start to go off on their own, separate paths in order
to pick up their shattered lives - going back to their roots
to try and pick things up where they left them. But it soon
becomes apparent to each of them that they can never go back
to what they once held dear.
Imagine
if you were to take all the best elements of movies like The
Breakfast Club and Stand By Me and transfer the
action to adults, instead of a tale about growing up. The
result would be something akin to 9 Souls. In fact
there is even a short speech at the end that is not dissimilar
to The Breakfast Club's closing scene - where we are
shown that there is a little of all of the characters in everyone.
At
two hours in length, this movie flew by and I could have easily
watched more - I felt that there were some of the characters
that we could have gotten to know a little better.
Extras
are fairly light and include an interview with the director
as well as trailers - which is a shame as this release would
have benefit from a few more behind the scenes featurettes
and interviews with the stars.
Every
once in a while a film comes along that enriches your life.
9 Souls is one such movie.
