Stephen
Kumalo, a black South African minister, is searching the unfamiliar
back alleys and shantytowns of Johannesburg for his son, Absalom.
But Kumalo's unwavering faith is put to the test when he finds
Absalom in jail facing a capital murder charge. Courage, dignity
and sacrifice fall prey to the whirlwind of racist hypocrisy
and hollow justice in Absalom's trial. Absalom's reconciliation
with his father, his jailhouse marriage to his pregnant sweetheart
Irnia and his heroic determination to tell the truth no matter
the cost set the stage for a tragic climax of both epic proportion
and documentary immediacy...
Lost
in the Stars may
sound like a 1960s made for TV movie about a crew of stranded
astronauts but it's not! This is a tale of oppression, racism
and family values. It's also a good old fashioned drama with
many a twist.
Brock
Peters (who Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans will recognise
for his later role as Benjamin Sisko's father) plays the part
of South African minister Stephen Kumalo. He's also got a
good set of lungs on him - he bursts into spontaneous song
every now and then for no good reason.
Sadly,
while the cast are all believable, there isn't much here to
keep you glued to the screen. Peters is by far the only real
shining star in what is an otherwise slow moving, and rather
dull, movie.
