Karen Warren is a beautiful hostage negotiator trying to escape
a tragic past. But her desperate flight leads to an even greater
horror when she finds herself stranded on a deserted highway
and at the mercy of a violent psychopath who commits a brutal
murder right before her eyes. But this time, Karen gets a
second chance. Stumbling upon an isolated research centre,
Karen meets a brilliant young scientist, and discovers a top-secret
device that gives her the opportunity to stop the savage rampage
before it begins!...
Don't
you just love action movies of the '80s, with all that over-the-top
violence, one-dimensional characters and superficial scripts?
Retroactive is no exception. Wait a moment... this
film was made in 1997!
Brutal
violence with the embellishment of a poor-man's Back to
the Future plot-line is Retroactive in a nutshell.
However, it is strangely watchable, thanks in main to James
Belushi's deliciously deranged villain. And even though our
heroine keeps going back in time to the same point, the viewer's
boredom that could arise from such repetition is kept in check
by the director's inventiveness.
Praise
is also due to Kylie Travis as Karen Warren. As yet another
tough female character facing seemingly insurmountable odds,
Travis plays the part convincingly. Her various emotional
states are effectively communicated, and certainly add to
the film's tension. Unfortunately, Frank Whaley as the scientist
fares less well, his acting being rather flat, and his character
having little to do.
For
a night's entertainment, Retroactive will satisfy.
