Set in late-1960's Hong Kong, Chow is an out of work journalist
and pulp fiction writer living in a cheap hotel. Bruised and
battered by love, he pursues a playboy lifestyle of zero commitment
and one-night stands. He develops a passion for a beautiful
call girl, enjoys a breezy summer with the hotel manager's
eldest daughter, and happens across the path of a professional
gambler who he met in Singapore some years before. In the
meantime, Chow works on a science fiction novel about a mysterious
hi-tech train that transports people to the year 2046 to reclaim
                    their lost memories...
                  2046
continues the story of Chow Mo Wan from Wong Kar-Wai's previous
film, In the Mood for Love, a few years after his ephemeral
affair with Maggie Cheung's Su Li-zhen.
                  There
really should be laws against this type of film. Not because
of the plot line or any shoddy acting (believe me, there is
nothing shoddy in this film). Its just that it feels exactly
the same as the directors last film In the Mood for Love.
                    Whilst
the setting and the actors are different, the basic plot seems
                    to be exactly the same.
                  Combining
a stunning visual style and the same plot as the last film
he made, Wong Kar-Wai has however, made a very good film nonetheless.
The film is about love and how it is able to transcend time
and space until it can haunt an individuals dreams and their
waking lives. It is a beautiful story to be told, and if you
haven't seen In the Mood for Love, I cannot recommend
this enough. If you have seen the previous film however, you
may want to look elsewhere for an evening's entertainment.
                  The
features on this disc include an exclusive directors interview
as well as the usual array of cast interviews and trailers.

                  This
is an ideal film to sit down with your partner to watch. With
a good combination of sadness and love, the story plucks at
the heartstrings and will make even the most stone hearted
                    person feel alive.
