Eric Rohmer is one of France's most celebrated directors and this Arrow Films collection brings together eight of his most influential works, including The Aviator's Wife, A Good Marriage, Pauline At The Beach, Full Moon In Paris, The Green Ray, My Girlfriend's Boyfriend, Love In The Afternoon and The Marquise Of O...

The Eric Rohmer Collection is not likely to appeal to anyone other than his fans. I've always had a bit of a problem with box sets like this. Firstly, as I've already mentioned, they only appeal to fans of the director, and secondly the choices picked for box sets are usually not those that you would have picked yourself. So if you are a die-hard fan you'll already have all of his movies - so who is a box set like this aimed at?

We were sent two discs from this collection (The Aviator's Wife and The Marquise of O) and so can only comment on the sound and picture quality of those discs. Neither sound nor picture is fantastic, but both are certainly better than VHS quality. It's not essential that we review all of the DVDs in this collection, as it's very unlikely that anyone who isn't already familiar with the movies will buy it.

The Aviator's Wife (Femme de l'aviateur, La) from 1981 is entertaining enough, but the script could have been written on the back of a matchbox. A young student is gutted when he thinks that his older girlfriend is cheating on him. Her old boyfriend seem to be back on the scene and he sets off to follow him. On his mission he starts chatting to a schoolgirl who becomes interested in his quest.

This movie has a certain charm, and you can't help but feel for the love struck student - but his constant clinging soon becomes a little freaky and you start to feel for his free spirited girlfriend.

The Marquise of O (Marquise von O..., Die) from 1976 is watchable, but certainly not one of Rohmer's better movies - it's almost as though he didn't really put much of an effort in. The plot revolves around the pregnancy of a woman who has not had any sexual encounters since her husband died several years earlier.

Sad to say though I doubt I'd watch either movie again. While I enjoyed them, there not the sort of film that you feel compelled to do any thing other with than stick them to the back of your DVD collection.

There is, according to the press release, a good selection of extras spread over the discs. These include radio interviews; a short movie; theatrical trailers and several other interviews.

If you are not a fan of Rohmer, then you will probably find this release incredibly dull. However, if you know his work and appreciate it, then you will find this a good way of seeing a pretty fair representation of his work.
