Once a proud member of a fearless gang, Yajima Kintaro left
his reckless surroundings and disappeared. Now, years later,
he is back with an infant son, Ryuta, and is determined to
become a white-collar worker thanks to a new job working for
a large construction company...
Salaryman
Kintaro is based on the comic strip originally created
by Hiroshi Motomiya - which went on to spawn a live action
TV show, starring Katsunori Takahashi as Kintaro.
The
first episode (Kintaro Joins a Company) in this animated
series asks more questions than it answers. How did Kintaro
get a job at Yamato Construction, and how does he keep it
when he manages to overstep the mark on a number of occasions?
These questions and others (How Kintaro finds his way back
to the city he left; why he has a young son; and why he is
trying to fit in to a society in which he doesn't really belong)
are gradually answered as this series progresses.
The animation is pretty standard for Japanese cartoons, but
the subject matter is more mature. Kintaro is not afraid to
head-butt his enemies a few times and then stamp on their
heads. While this is not really something that Saturday morning
kids TV would find acceptable, it does make it all the more
appealing for a more adult audience. It's great that there
is something on the market that can offer us the same buzz
that we once got watching kids classics like Battle of
the Planets when we were younger.
This
first volume kicks some serious ass (as the Americans would
say) and I'm really looking forward to discovering how this
series develops. For all of us that grew up on Japanese animation,
like Battle of the Planets, this is the next best thing
to reliving our childhoods.
Extras
are a little thin on the ground, with only a couple of short
interviews with director Tomoharu Katsumata and producer Toru
Nakano. The audio, interestingly enough, is in 5.1 surround
sound - which surprised me. I was expecting a flat stereo
track.
Go
on, treat yourself to some thought proving animation - you
won't regret it.
