It's the year 55BC and the Romans are leading a bloody
invasion all over Europe, which is heading towards the British
Isles. The fate of old Blighty rests on the shoulders of three
unorthodox heroes: sisters Smirgut, Dwyfuc and Worthaboutapig.
But are they ready to face the full power of the Roman Empire?...
Gladiatress
stars three comediennes better known for their work on Smack
the Pony - Fiona
Allen, Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips - as three sisters:
Smirgut the Fierce, princess Dwyfuc ("Do I F*ck"
- geddit?) and Worthaboutapig.
The
movie starts with Dwyfuc (Mackichan) being kidnapped by a
Roman scout party. It then falls to her sister, Worthaboutapig
(Phillips) to track down the other sister in the family Smirgut
(Allen) so that they can head off and save Dwyfuc. Of course
there's a slight problem, in that Smirgut and Dwyfuc hate
each others guts and have not spoken to each other for years.
So how can Worthaboutapig persuade Smirgut to risk life and
limb to save her hated sibling?
The
comedy in this movie is very hit and miss. While there are
plenty of gags that raise a smile, there's very little here
that will have you laughing out loud. There's
also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance by Pam Ferris
This
movie's key audience should be 10-15 year olds, what a shame
then that there are a few too many expletives that ensure
that this is released as a 15 certificate.
Extras
include interviews with the main cast and director; a five
minute "Making of" featurette which repeats a lot
of the footage from the interviews; and a trailer which makes
the film look a lot funnier that it actually is.
For
mindless and very silly fun, this is not a bad movie. And
at under £13 you can't really complain.
