The drama of World War II's exciting war at sea is detailed
in this legendary, award-winning historical epic that has
been hailed as one of the most influential documentaries in
television history. The 26 half-hour episodes were compiled
from over 13,000 hours of authentic combat footage shot by
the U.S., British, German, and Japanese navies during every
major naval engagement of World War II, from the Nazi Wolfpacks
to the Battle of Okinawa. Narrated by Leonard Graves with
original music by famed composer Richard Rodgers, this 1952
series is a landmark classic that still remains the most comprehensive
account of World War II's naval battles...
Victory
at Sea is
a 26 episode World War II documentary that chronicles the
events from an American perspective. Made in 1952, the show
was produced with the full co-operation of the US Navy. Each
episode consists of black and white wartime film narrated
by Leonard Graves.
It
is the Normandy D-Day landings that will probably be the most
familiar campaign in this collection for most viewers. And
it will certainly fill in the gaps for those who want to know
just what the Navy went through.
Not
surprisingly the picture quality is pretty poor, there are
plenty of scratches drop out on the print and the soundtrack
is only mono.
Extras
are a little thin on the ground too - and are duplicated on
each disc. This is mainly down to the fact that this was previously
available to buy with the discs being split into different
volumes. It was also released a few years ago as a box set,
but at a higher RRP.
The
episodes are entertaining enough. If you want to experience
what it was like during the war from the US Navy's point of
view, then this is about as close as you're likely to get
to a definitive account.
