A young doll animated with life is caged and used by an
unscrupulous man in England in a ventriloquism act. Wondering
about its origins it sees a television show reporting on the
making of a film in Hollywood about Chucky and Tiffany. Spotting
the Made in Japan stamp on their wrists, matching his own,
it makes a bid for freedom, sending itself parcel post to
Hollywood. Finding the dolls it knows are its parents, it
is a simple matter to animate them using the talisman it was
left with at birth. When they kill an effects technician who
tries to work on Tiffany, actress Jennifer Tilly discovers
the body and has to make a hasty departure amidst a media
frenzy. The dysfunctional family of dolls hide in her car
and, when Tilly comes on to a film director in order to get
a part, Chucky and Tiffany hatch a plan to take over their
bodies in order to become human again. But events don't exactly
go according to plan. Furthermore, the progeny of their loins
is having an identity crisis. Treated as a boy by Chucky and
a girl by Tiffany, Glen/da begins to have psychotic episodes...
Chucky,
the Good Guy children's doll possessed by a serial killer,
returns in another lively and inventively entertaining outing.
The Child's Play series has continued to grow over
the years since its humble original venture, with only the
third film perhaps not living up to expectations.
Bride of Chucky, the previous one to this, was a minor
masterpiece with a multitude of set pieces, in-jokes and great
music. Where Seed of Chucky matches it is in the excellent
humour. There are some great lines, such as when Glen/da asks
its parents why they kill, and Chucky replies, "Well... um...
it's a hobby really. It helps us to relax."
As
expected, Chucky gets most of the best lines, with:
"Enough
of your mother, already! I killed that bitch 20 years ago
and she still won't shut up!"
"Nobody's
perfect. I've got a few skeletons in the closet too." He
hammers on the door and three bodies fall out. "See?" -
and countless others.
There's
even a homage to that axe-through-the-door scene from The
Shining.
Special
features include the short but entertaining Family Helli-day
Slide Show; the behind-the-scenes Conceiving The Seed
of Chucky; Jennifer Tilly's Video Diary from The Tonight
Show; Mun2 Up Close With The Seed of Chucky Stars;
and a feature commentary by Don Mancini and Jennifer Tilly.
Writer/director Don Mancini, who recently did such a great
job with Joe Lansdale's Bubba
Ho-Tep should be congratulated here for creating
another thoroughly enjoyable slice of fun horror with our
favourite killer doll. Highly recommended.
However, for any big fan of Chucky and his exploits I would
strongly suggest you go for the region
1
version which contains more unrated extras, including a Chucky
interview and screen test, over 150 trivia facts about Chucky,
a slashed scene in which Tiffany fights temptation to off
Debbie Carrington, and another commentary in which Don Mancini
is this time joined by puppet master Tony Gardner.
