The ultimate sport of kill-or-be-killed is now an explosive
new experience, with mind-blowing new ways to move like lightening
and annihilate enemies. For the first time, pilot a formidable
force of battle vehicles that tear across the land, skies
and deep space. Load up pulverising new weapons. Storm across
40 never-before-seen arena maps. Move faster, fly higher and
shoot further...
If
you're not familiar with this series, let me give you a quick
overview. Unreal Tournament 2004 is the latest in the
franchise, started in 1999, from Atari. It's a first person
shooter (FPS) which sees an annual tournament of death and
destruction marketed as a sport.
So
why should you buy this if you already own the 2003 version?
Well, for starters there are ten different game modes, including
the edition of Onslaught - a new team game which sees each
team with it's own power core. The cores are connected by
a series of power nodes and you must take over these power
nodes in order to form a linking chain to your enemies power
core - so that you can destroy it. You can control any one
of a number of vehicles to help you in your goal.
This
game on it's own is worth the price tag, but there's way more.
You can play on- or off-line (until you know what you are
doing you are advised to stay off-line); single or multi-player
games; team or individual matches; create mods, movies and
even full games with a toolset that is included with the game.
There
are huge gaming areas for you to navigate and each weapon
functions as a double weapon - which is mega cool. For example,
the standard assault rifle can also be used to launch grenades
at your enemies. And those weapons that don't have an alternate
firing option, instead allow you to home in on your target.
But,
while all this means that you have an awesome firepower at
your disposal, you also have to bear in mind the fact that
this also means you are more of a sitting duck for your enemies.
Which
brings us onto the bots in this game - which are a cut above
those in most FPS games. And this helps greatly if you are
playing off-line. You can have computer controlled bots on
your side too and to be honest, you'll have a job working
out whether you are on- or off-line.
If
you want something that will take you months to master, a
game that you wake up each morning itching to play, then Unreal
Tournament 2004 could be the game for you.
This
game truly is unreal!
