Assume the identity of undercover cop Tanner and sell your
services as a driver-for-hire to the highest bidder in order
to infiltrate a powerful crime ring. Screech through sun drenched
Miami, speed over the hills of San Francisco, slide cross
the rain drenched streets of Los Angeles or cause chaos in
the hustle and bustle of New York...
Mastertronic's
budget range of classic games under the PC Gamer Presents
banner is a stroke of genius. Now you can purchase some
of the best games of the last few years. Only games which
received an 80+ score out of 100 in PC Gamer magazine
are considered for this range - so you know the quality is
going to be spot on. Not only that but at under £10
games have not been this cheap since the days of the 48K Spectrum.
Driver
is
a classic game. On it's initial release it was embraced by
racing game fanatics as well as those who usually steered
clear of automobile simulators. It was about as close to being
in your own episode of The Sweeny as you race down
busy streets or secluded back alleys, sending boxes flying
as you go.
And when the mission is over you can sit back, relax, and
relive those glorious handbrake turns while you wave goodbye
to the cops again and again thanks to the 'film
director' editing feature.
It's
not as slick as you'll remember, but for its time it was cutting
edge stuff. Now, on reflection, it's still damn entertaining.
While on its original release it probably was worthy of 9
or even 10/10, it's dropped at least a point - mainly because
Driver 2 was such an improvement. With Driv3r
due out in June (2004), this might whet your appetite if you've
never experienced this franchise previously.
