I
may be stating the obvious here, but Cycling Manager 4
is not going to appeal to everyone. This is a very niche market
product. So, for that reason alone, very few people are likely
to pick this up by accident. Which makes reviewing this game
all the more tricky. If I wasn't keen on this genre of game,
then my review will reflect that this is a bad game - when
in fact it could be a good game, but just not my kind of thing.
To
be honest, I've never been overly keen on "manager"
style games, but there is something about this product which
is addictive. Cycling
Manager 4 is claimed to be the ultimate racing challenge.
Every race is presented in 3D as the pack swoop past detailed
European landscapes.
The
game allows you to manage all aspects of training, expenses
and the execution of race tactics. For the first few races
I didn't have a clue what was going on and it was luck, rather
than tactics, that stopped me from coming in last place in
every race. But, once I figured out what I was supposed to
be doing, there was something incredibly satisfying about
soaring past the opposition in order to take first place (not
that I ever manager to stay there for very long).
Given
a few more hours hard work, and I'm sure that I will be beating
the opposition to at least finish a few races in first position,
and that's part of the fun of this game. It's also one of
the reasons that you'll be coming back to it time and time
again.
