Released
just in time for Halloween, this collection of music from
John Carpenter movies is a wonderful look back (or listen
back if you like) to some of the greatest soundtracks of all
time.
The
main theme from Halloween is so simple, yet is still
so haunting and there are plenty of other little gems that
you had probably forgotten about. There
are classic themes and incidental music from Escape from
New York, Starman, Assault on Precinct 13, Big Trouble in
Little China and The Fog.
While
Carpenter's movies were never blessed with orchestral soundtracks
to rival the likes of Lawrence of Arabia, they still
have their rightful place in Hollywood history. They are simple,
yet they haunt you for some time to come. I am still humming
the theme to the Starman and I can't get that damn
Halloween theme out of my head.
This
collection also includes cover notes on Carpenter's work and
history as well as giving a brief synopsis for each of his
movies.
The
only real problem I had was the CD case. Sadly it is presented
in one of those cases that every time you remove the CD one
of the centre prongs holding it in place breaks off. So once
you have listened to the album around six times the CD is
rattling around in its case.
Overall
a great collection that any film buff, especially Carpenter
fans, shouldn't be with out.
