From a very early age Jerome Moross had mapped out a future
in music composition - strangely enough he also went to school
with Bernard Herrmann.
This
album features tracks from some of his greatest work in the
movies. The Valley of Gwangi: The Classic Film Music of
Jerome Moross has
been reissued due to demand from soundtrack fans and it's
not hard to see why. This collection features world premiere
digital recordings of music from classic movies including
The War Lord, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Sharkfighters,
The Mountain Road, Rachel Rachel and Wagon Train.
But, more importantly it features a 20-minute suite from The
Valley of Gwangi - The Ray Harryhausen monster fest directed
by James O'Connolly.
There
is a definite western theme running through the majority of
Moross' scores. Huck Finn, Wagon Train (obviously)
and large parts of The Valley of Gwangi all have that
easily recognisable western genre feel to them.
Five
Finger Exercise sticks out from the rest of the tracks
as it has a Hitchcockian feel to it. But it is the tracks
from The Valley of Gwangi that will be the reason that
most collector's will buy this album, and the fact that you
can now discover some of Moross' lesser known work is an added
bonus.
An
interesting collection, wonderfully recorded and packaged
by Silva Screen, although not an essential purchase for movie
buffs.
