A Star Wars movie would not be the same without a score
composed by John Williams. From the first track it is clear
that Williams is on incredible form. The introduction, after
the all too familiar Theme, is emotional in its delivery
and brings to mind the works of Elgar.
Across
the Skies (Love Theme from Attack of the Clone) follows
and wouldn't be out of place amongst Prokofiev's Romeo
and Juliet ballet. This theme is arguably Williams' finest
love theme to date and is much more moving than any of the
tracks he composed for E.T. or Close Encounters
and certainly on a par with his moving work on Schindler's
List.
There
is much borrowing from his earlier works and elements of Raiders
of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park come creeping
in when you least expect it. There are also a number of track
which pay homage to his earlier Star Wars works. The
theme, which was always associated with Darth Maul, from the
last movie is used extensively and small segments from the
original Star Wars soundtrack are used in passing.
Return to Tatooine illustrates this beautifully.
Williams
use of an Electric guitar on Zam the Assassin and The Chase
Through Coruscant seems a little out of character, but
it is great to see Spielberg's old friend unafraid to experiment.
A
word of warning this CD is not compatible with PCs or Macs
(according to the cover) however having bought this on CD
I was eager to transfer it to my MP3 player and I had no problem
in getting my computer to recognise it.
Not
only the best Star Wars soundtrack, but possibly Willams'
greatest work to date. For those who thought Williams had
gone off the boil after Schindler's List then this
will reaffirm his place as one of the best film composers
working today.
