A decade after the legendary mask of Loki wreaked havoc on
the life of an unsuspecting adult, the magical mask finds
its way into the possession of a child...
What
a shame this soundtrack didn't have more than the miserly
24 minutes of original orchestrated score by Randy Edelman.
I could have easily lived without some of the other inclusions
(especially Stephen Bishop murdering Lois Armstrong's classic
What a Wonderful World.)
Compilations
like this frustrate me. Those that want to buy a soundtrack
for the orchestrated score usually don't want to hear songs
that appeared for 2 seconds in the background. And those that
only like vocals on their soundtracks - usually rap these
days - don't want to listen to the orchestrated scores. Personally
I fall into the former category. I love the orchestrated music
- if I wanted a compilation album of old music there are plenty
of classic collections out there.
The
soundtrack kicks off with Ryan Cabrera's Inside Your Mind.
This is your typical movie soft pop track and is relatively
pleasant - although nothing earth shattering. The
rest of the CD consists of old classics (including Chubby
Checker's The Twist and Neil Diamond's Thank the
Lord for the Night Time), truly awful reworkings of some
classic tracks (like the very poor If My Friends Could
See Me Now and the aforementioned dire reworking of What
a Wonderful World) and Randy Edelman's score.
Edelman's
music for Son of Mask is head and shoulders above the
rest of the tracks. It's so busy - and I'm sure I witnessed
a homage to Ennio Morricone's score for Once Upon a Time
in the West.
If
you ignore the bad tracks and just listen to Edelman's music
then you'll enjoy this release. It's just a shame we weren't
given a little more of the original orchestrated score.
