In 2004 the world of cinema lost one of the most iconic figures
in film composing. In a career that spanned half-a-century
and over 250 films, Elmer Bernstein was responsible for writing
the music to many of the greatest and most loved movies of
all time ranging from The Ten Commandments, The Magnificent
Seven and The Great Escape, through to True
Grit and Airplane. This collection has been lovingly
created and compiled as a tribute to a genius and true master
of the art of film scoring...
Elmer Bernstein's career spanned more than 250 movies - that's
a lot of music! However, Silva Screen has once again stepped
in with this excellent sampler of the great man's work. As
a starting point to Bernstein's work this release could not
be bettered.
The
two-CD set includes excellent recordings from The Birdman
of Alcatraz, Thoroughly Modern Millie and An
American Werewolf in London. There's also the obligatory
The Magnificent Seven theme along with the lovingly
recreated score from To Kill a Mockingbird. If nothing
else, Bernstein was capable of managing a wide variety of
styles as these tracks clearly demonstrate.
Added
bonuses include a splendid rendition of Bernstein's theme
from Zulu Dawn and to round things off there's The
Great Escape march. All told, this is yet another splendid
package from Silva Screen and well worth a serious listen.
