"Just when you think you can't stand to hear another Christmas
carol, here I come with a holiday treat that will make you
actually appreciate the insanity of the Yuletide season. Wrap
this CD as a gift to yourself, pretend you forgot what it
is and act surprised when you open it. Close your eyes and
imagine you're with me at my house Christmas morning listening
to favourite carols" - John Waters...
A
John Waters Christmas is exactly what you'd expect
the Waters's household to be like over the festive period
- a slightly twisted version to that which the rest of the
world shares.
It
kicks off with Fat Daddy singing Fat Daddy - a song
about Santa Claus having soul. This is followed by Tiny Tim's
rendition of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer - probably
the most bizarre version you'll ever hear.
Other
highlights include Here Comes Fatty Claus by Rudolph
and Gang, which is a very tongue in cheek anti-commercialism
Christmas song. Alvin and the Chipmunks's fans (more popular
in the USA than over here in Britain) will also appreciate
the inclusion of the animated chipmunk's version of Sleigh
Ride.
The
album is wrapped up by one of the best inclusions on this
collection - Santa Claus is a Black Man by AKIM &
the Teddy Van Production Company.
It's
odd, it's fun and I think it's safe to say that this is probably
the best alternative Christmas album you'll ever hear.
