Another
collection album! "Oh! No!" I hear you cry. Usually
these things hit the bargain bin in six weeks and are generally
recorded by the Davey Love Orchestra. But once you see the
Silva Screen logo you know that this has a fighting chance.
Silva
Screen do not disappoint. For £14 you get four CDs that
contain classic tracks from some of the great and some not
so great sci-fi movies from 2001: A Space Odyssey to
A.I. There are plenty of Star Wars and Star
Trek tracks to keep sci-fi fans happy who are worried
that they might be fobbed off with the well worn themes.
There
are also a handful of sound effects thrown in for good measure.
One annoying thing though is the fact that the back of the
CD box doesn't list exactly what the track is. For example
on disc four it simply labels both tracks and 6 & 7 as
The Empire Strikes Back and there are two Star Trek:
Deep Space Nine tracks - one is the theme and the other
is a moving section from The Visitor.
The
sound quality is pretty impressive and, while the majority
are not the original recordings I have a vast collection of
soundtracks and I couldn't tell the difference for the most
part.
If
you were going to make your own compilation of Science Fiction
music then you would probably come close to Silva Screen's
collection. An essential purchase for those that are not serious
enough about soundtracks to purchase full movie scores, but
interested in dipping in and out of some of the industry's
best scores.
