When Gilbert Noble meets the girl of his dreams, it is
not long before the couple are engaged to be married. But
then a disastrous personal revelation drives them apart, and
also costs Gil his job. A year or so later, Gil sets out to
win Jo back, but she is already engaged to another man...
As Jo and Gil, Heather Graham (Austin Powers 2, From Hell)
and Chris Klein (American Pie 1 and 2) are pretty
much the straight characters in this wacky comedy.
Produced
by Bobby and Peter Farrelly, who directed Dumb and Dumber
and There's Something About Mary, there's something
of a similarity to the basic premise of Mary. It's
the familiar tale of boy meets girl; boy is separated from
girl by a tragic and socially debilitating circumstance; boy
attempts to locate girl and win her back, but is faced by
determined competition.
As
you would expect, there are plenty of politically incorrect
and/or bad-taste jokes to offend delicate sensibilities everywhere.
The name of Jo's home town, Beaver, provides obvious humorous
potential, which is exploited to the full! Other jokes revolve
around such matters as pierced nipples, incest, necrophilia
and physical disabilities. I did initially feel that the depiction
of Jo's unfortunate stroke-afflicted father, Walter (Richard
Jenkins), was a bit beyond the pale, but the balance is ultimately
redressed by a heroic moment towards the end of the movie.
Special
mention must be made of Sally Field's splendidly seedy performance
as Jo's graceless mother, Valdine. Meanwhile Orlando Jones,
playing the stoned pilot Dig McCaffrey, who Gil - quite literally
- bumps into en route to Beaver, enjoys greater opportunities
to exhibit his comic talents than he did during Evolution.
This
film is not as outrageously madcap as Dumb and Dumber
or as heart-warming as American Pie, but it's still
well worth 90 minutes of your time. As a bonus (and no doubt
attempting to rake back some sales figures from the booming
DVD market), there are a few deleted scenes and a five-minute
featurette at the end of the tape.
